What Does a Health & Wellness Coach Do? (And Why I Became One)
If you've ever visited my website or social media, you've probably seen that I'm a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach.
And if you're like most people, you may have wondered...
What does a Health & Wellness Coach actually do?
It's one of the questions I get asked the most, and I understand why. Health coaching is still a relatively new profession, and many people aren't quite sure how it's different from a personal trainer, therapist, nutritionist, or life coach.
The easiest way I explain it is this……
A Health & Wellness Coach helps people bridge the gap between knowing what they want to do and actually doing it.
That might sound simple, but as most of us know, behavior change isn't easy.
My Path to Health Coaching Started With a Feeling
My path to becoming a health coach didn't begin because I wanted another certification.
It started in November 2024.
I had spent more than a decade working in the nonprofit sector, and I found myself carrying a heaviness that I couldn't quite shake. Across the country, conversations about funding, budgets, and reducing services were becoming more common. I could see the writing on the wall. Programs that families relied on were becoming more uncertain, and I remember thinking about the ripple effect that would have on communities.
It wasn't hopelessness.
It was grief.
I care deeply about the work I do, and I care deeply about the families and communities we serve. Watching the possibility of fewer resources and more barriers weighed on me.
Then one day I had a thought that completely shifted my perspective.
I may not be able to change what is happening on a national level, but I can choose how I respond to it.
Instead of sitting in that heaviness, I wanted to transmute it into something meaningful. I wanted to create another way to serve my community, one that empowered people to improve their health and well-being regardless of what was happening around them.
That single thought changed everything.
Finding the Right Program at the Right Time
As I started exploring different options, I came across the Health & Wellness Coaching program at Mesa College here in San Diego.
It was a one-year program, and the more I learned about it, the more everything clicked. Looking back, I think I had already been coaching for years without realizing there was a profession built around those skills.
Throughout my nonprofit career, I had spent countless hours listening to people, helping them navigate barriers, connecting them with resources, asking thoughtful questions, and supporting them as they worked toward goals that mattered to them.
Health coaching gave those skills a framework.
It wasn't about telling people what they should do.
It was about partnering with them.
What Does a Health & Wellness Coach Actually Do?
One of the biggest misconceptions about health coaching is that we spend our sessions giving advice.
That's actually not what coaching is. As a health coach, my role isn't to tell you exactly how to live your life.
My role is to help you uncover what matters most to you, identify what's getting in the way, and support you as you create realistic, sustainable changes that fit your life.
Maybe you want to manage stress differently.
Maybe you've been trying to build a consistent exercise routine.
Maybe you want to improve your sleep, create healthier eating habits, establish better work-life boundaries, or simply feel more like yourself again.
Health coaching isn't about perfection…… It's about progress.
It's also about recognizing that you are the expert on your own life.
I simply help guide the conversation.
Launching Savvy Staci LLC
In April 2025, I launched Savvy Staci LLC.
At first, I knew I wanted to offer coaching, but I also knew I didn't want to build a business that fit neatly into one box. Because that's never been me. Throughout my own life, I've experienced how different practices can support different people in different seasons.
Sometimes what someone needs is a coaching conversation.
Sometimes they need an hour where they don't have to solve everyone else's problems.
Sometimes they need better sleep.
Sometimes they need space to reconnect with themselves.
I wanted my business to reflect that.
A Blended Approach to Well-Being
As I continued my education, I became an ACE Certified Health Coach in the fall of 2025 and earned my National Board Certification as a Health & Wellness Coach in the spring of 2026. I was grateful to pass both certification exams on my first attempt.
Around the same time, I was also training in Yoga Nidra, Reiki, and sound healing.
Rather than seeing those as separate services, I began seeing how beautifully they could complement one another.
Coaching remains the foundation of my work.
But depending on each person's goals and preferences, I can also integrate complementary practices like customized Yoga Nidra recordings, virtual Reiki sessions, or in-person sound baths.
For example, if someone is working on improving sleep, reducing stress, or creating a more consistent self-care routine, a personalized Yoga Nidra practice can become another tool to support the goals we're already working toward together.
If someone enjoys Reiki and finds it meaningful, we can incorporate virtual Reiki as a complementary wellness practice alongside coaching conversations.
Every coaching relationship is different because every person is different.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to well-being.
Why This Work Means So Much to Me
When I think back to how I felt in November 2024, I'm grateful I didn't stay stuck in that feeling. Instead, it became the catalyst for building something new. My nonprofit career taught me the importance of removing barriers and meeting people where they are.
Health coaching gave me another way to continue doing exactly that. Whether I'm sitting with someone during a coaching session, leading a sound bath in San Diego, creating a personalized Yoga Nidra recording, or offering complementary Reiki, my goal is always the same.
I want people to leave feeling more connected to themselves than when they arrived.
I want them to recognize that meaningful change doesn't happen overnight.
It happens one conversation, one choice, and one small step at a time.
Could Health Coaching Be Right for You?
If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply ready to make changes but aren't sure where to start, health coaching might be exactly the kind of support you've been looking for.
You don't have to have everything figured out before you begin. You just have to be willing to take the first step. At the moment, I'm accepting a small number of new coaching clients.
If you'd like to learn more about working together or explore my blended coaching approach that can include personalized Yoga Nidra, complementary virtual Reiki, and other wellness practices tailored to your goals, I'd love to connect.
Sometimes the hardest part is getting started.
You don't have to do it alone.
