Cancer New Moon Reflections | Community, Dharma, Sound Healing & Wellness in San Diego

There are some days that invite us to slow down and listen a little more deeply.

For me, Tuesday, July 14, felt exactly like that.

We had a Cancer New Moon, King Tides were peaking along the San Diego coastline, and emotionally I could feel the shift. Cancer is a water sign ruled by the Moon, often associated with home, intuition, nurturing, and emotional depth. Whether you follow astrology or simply enjoy noticing nature's rhythms, it was one of those days where everything felt just a little more intense.

I've always been fascinated by the relationship between the moon and the ocean. Watching the King Tides rise while reflecting on the Cancer New Moon reminded me that just as the moon influences the tides, it also has a way of inviting us to pause and check in with ourselves.

Building Stronger Communities in San Diego

My workday began with one of my favorite parts of my full-time job…. connecting with community partners.

I attended a meeting at Your Safe Place, a Family Justice Center in downtown San Diego, which provides incredible support and resources for individuals and families experiencing domestic violence, abuse, and other traumatic situations. I was excited to learn they're planning to relocate to the Kearny Mesa area, making their services even more accessible for many local families.

One of the things I love most about living and working in San Diego is the collaborative spirit among nonprofit organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and community agencies. There are so many people doing meaningful work behind the scenes, and it's inspiring to be part of those conversations.

Receiving Instead of Holding Space

After work, I drove to Bay Park for a free Cancer New Moon Sound Bath hosted by my friend Jessica, a local REALTOR® with RE/MAX, and Arthur, owner of The Meditation Nook.

As someone who regularly facilitates sound baths, I don't always take enough time to receive one myself.

It was exactly what I needed.

Arthur is an incredibly talented sound bath practitioner, and Jessica beautifully accompanied the evening with guitar and singing. Her voice created such a calming atmosphere that perfectly complemented the crystal singing bowls.

The event took place in a peaceful indoor-outdoor setting, and everyone gathered in a circle to reflect on what they hoped to cultivate during this new lunar cycle.

Cancer energy encourages us to nurture ourselves, strengthen our relationships, and create emotional safety. As we shared our intentions aloud, I found myself reflecting on what truly feels fulfilling rather than simply productive.

Receiving instead of always giving was one of the greatest gifts of the evening.

Walking Through the Cancer New Moon

When I arrived home, the San Diego weather was warm, humid, and still glowing with evening sunlight.

Rather than staying inside, I decided to go for a walk around my neighborhood.

Walking has become one of my favorite forms of meditation.

No destination.

No agenda.

Just movement, fresh air, and time to think.

Lately I've been listening to Everyday Dharma by Suneel Gupta, and it has quickly become one of my favorite personal development books.

The central theme of the book is discovering your dharma, or your purpose, and living in alignment with it.

One story in particular really stayed with me.

Gupta describes how we often believe major life decisions are permanent, as if choosing one path means the other disappears forever. He shares examples of people pursuing ambitious dreams, only to discover that if things didn't unfold as planned, many of those previous opportunities were still available.

That perspective felt incredibly freeing.

Sometimes we avoid taking risks because we're afraid there is no way back.

But often there is.

The greatest reward isn't always the outcome.

Sometimes it's who we become through the experience.

Why Audiobooks Have Changed the Way I Learn

One realization I've had recently is how much I love listening to audiobooks.

Growing up, I always believed physically reading a book was somehow the "better" way to learn.

Now I'm not so sure.

I've discovered that I actually retain more information while listening.

As someone who works with immigrant and refugee families, I also think often about how knowledge has been passed from generation to generation through spoken language long before it was ever written down.

Humans communicated through stories, songs, and spoken word for thousands of years.

Maybe that's one reason listening feels so natural.

Recently I've started listening to a chapter first and then reading it afterward.

It's completely transformed my learning experience.

If you have a San Diego Public Library card, I highly recommend checking out Libby and CloudLibrary. Both apps allow you to borrow ebooks and audiobooks completely free.

I've also been using Spotify Premium's audiobook feature, which has introduced me to several wonderful titles.

Books Currently Inspiring Me

Alongside Everyday Dharma, I've also been reading The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk.

If you've experienced trauma or are interested in understanding how trauma affects the nervous system, it's an incredibly important book.

That said, I also want to acknowledge that it discusses difficult topics, so it's worth approaching it when you're in a supportive headspace.

As someone who practices trauma-informed coaching, Reiki, Yoga Nidra, and sound healing, learning more about the science of trauma continues to deepen the way I support others.

Exciting News for Health & Wellness Coaching

Later in the evening, I spent some time creating content about one of the biggest developments I've seen for our profession.

CMS recently announced a proposal that could allow National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWCs) to become recognized providers under Medicare beginning in 2027.

For our profession, this is a huge step forward.

One of my greatest hopes is to make health and wellness coaching more accessible.

People are already investing in their health through insurance. Expanding coverage gives more individuals the opportunity to work with coaches who specialize in areas that resonate with them.

For me, that means blending evidence-based coaching with astrology, Yoga Nidra, Reiki, sound healing, Human Design, and nervous system regulation into my Cosmic Alignment Coaching program.

Every coaching experience is personalized, trauma-informed, and designed to help clients create sustainable behavior change while reconnecting with themselves.

Looking Ahead

As I finished unpacking from my United Kingdom trip and prepared for family visiting next week, I found myself reflecting on the day.

The Cancer New Moon reminded me that growth doesn't always come through doing more.

Sometimes it comes through receiving.

Through slowing down.

Through listening.

Through trusting your intuition.

And through remembering that your purpose isn't something you have to chase.

Sometimes it's simply something you continue choosing, one intentional day at a time.
