What Is Yoga Nidra? A Powerful Practice for Deep Rest + Sound Healing in San Diego
If you’ve ever heard the term Yoga Nidra and wondered what it actually is, you’re not alone.
Before I experienced it myself, I had no idea what to expect. Was I supposed to move? Was it like a meditation? A nap? A yoga class?
Now, after a year of practice and training, I can confidently say that Yoga Nidra is one of the most powerful tools for nervous system healing, deep rest, and transformation.
And when combined with a sound bath in San Diego, the experience becomes even more immersive.
My First Yoga Nidra Experience in San Diego
Last year, I attended my very first Yoga Nidra sound bath with Ashley at Ritual Wellness.
It was during their one-year anniversary, and all classes were free. I didn’t overthink it. I just signed up.
Ritual is one of my favorite studios. It’s small, intimate, and incredibly intentional. They provide everything you need: Yoga mats, Blankets, Bolsters, and Eye masks.
You just show up.
I remember laying down, not knowing what was about to happen.
Ashley began guiding us through the Yoga Nidra meditation while playing quartz crystal sound bowls, and within minutes, I felt completely transported.
It was like being in between worlds. Awake, but deeply relaxed. A space I had never accessed before.
That experience changed everything for me.
What Is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra, often called “yogic sleep,” is a guided meditation practice that brings the body into deep relaxation while the mind remains aware.
It originated from ancient yogic traditions in India and was later systematized into a modern practice by teachers like Swami Satyananda Saraswati.
Unlike traditional yoga classes, there is no movement.
You lie down comfortably while being guided through a structured meditation that moves your awareness through different layers of the body and mind.
What Happens During Yoga Nidra?
A typical Yoga Nidra session includes:
Settling + Intention (Sankalpa)
A personal intention or affirmation planted in the subconscious mindBody Scan
Moving awareness through different parts of the body to release tensionBreath Awareness
Slowing and deepening the breath to regulate the nervous systemEmotional + Sensory Awareness
Observing sensations, feelings, and opposites (like heavy/light, warm/cool)Visualization
Guided imagery to access deeper subconscious statesReturn + Integration
Gently coming back into the body
This process brings you into a brainwave state between waking and sleeping, where deep healing and rewiring can occur.
Why Yoga Nidra Is So Powerful
Yoga Nidra works directly with the nervous system and subconscious mind.
Benefits can include:
Reduced stress and anxiety
Improved sleep
Emotional regulation
Increased clarity and focus
Deep physical relaxation
In a world that constantly keeps us in a state of doing, Yoga Nidra invites you into simply being.
Why It’s Often Overlooked
Yoga Nidra is sometimes misunderstood or overlooked because:
People expect movement in yoga classes
It looks “too simple” from the outside
Slowing down can feel uncomfortable at first
Many people are not used to stillness
But the truth is:
The deepest healing often happens in stillness.
Yoga Nidra + Sound Bath: A Powerful Combination
After completing my sound healing certification with Kinsey at The Sound Space, I knew I wanted to deepen this practice.
I asked Ashley where she trained, and she pointed me to Trilogy Sanctuary in La Jolla with Natalia.
Soon after, I enrolled in their 30-hour Yoga Nidra teacher training.
Now, I integrate Yoga Nidra with sound healing because they complement each other so beautifully.
Yoga Nidra guides the mind
Sound baths support the body and energetic field
Together, they help you drop into a deeper state of relaxation and receptivity.
