From Sound Healing to Neuroscience: Why I'm Exploring the Science Behind Sound
If you had asked me a few years ago where my career was headed, I never would have imagined I'd be spending my evenings reading neuroscience journals, drafting exploratory research concepts, and having conversations with researchers about nervous system regulation.
Yet here I am.
Looking back, it makes perfect sense.
My Journey Into Sound Healing
When I first experienced a sound bath, I was struck by something I couldn't quite explain.
People often describe sound healing as relaxing or peaceful, but I found myself asking a different question:
Why?
What is happening within the brain and nervous system during these experiences?
As someone who later became an NBC-HWC (National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach), I was trained to approach wellness through evidence-based behavior change, motivational interviewing, and whole-person health. That education taught me the importance of asking thoughtful questions and evaluating the available evidence rather than making assumptions.
The more I learned about coaching, the more curious I became about the intersection of neuroscience, sensory processing, and complementary wellness practices.
A Personal Connection to Autism Spectrum Disorder
My curiosity isn't just professional.
It's deeply personal.
My twin nephews have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and watching them experience and interact with the world has profoundly shaped the questions I ask.
Many individuals with ASD experience differences in sensory processing and nervous system regulation. While existing behavioral and medical interventions remain essential, I found myself wondering whether carefully designed research could help us better understand how auditory and vibrational stimuli might complement existing approaches for some individuals.
Not because I believe we've already found the answer.
But because I believe the question is worth exploring.
Asking Questions, Not Making Claims
That curiosity inspired me to draft an exploratory research concept titled:
Auditory and Vibrational Stimuli as Potential Supports for Neuro-Affective Regulation in Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This proposal is not a published research study, nor does it claim that sound healing is an evidence-based treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Instead, it outlines questions that I believe deserve further scientific investigation, including:
Could specific auditory or vibrational stimuli influence observable markers of regulation or engagement?
Do individuals respond differently to these sensory experiences?
Which characteristics of sound or vibration might be most relevant for future research?
How can researchers design ethical, evidence-informed studies that prioritize safety and individual differences?
Science advances by asking meaningful questions before drawing conclusions.
That's exactly where this work begins.
Learning From Researchers
One of the most exciting parts of this journey has been the opportunity to receive feedback on my exploratory research concept from Dr. Fiza Singh, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Conversations with experienced researchers have reinforced something I deeply value:
Curiosity and scientific rigor go hand in hand.
Every discussion reminds me how much there is still to learn and how important it is to approach emerging ideas with humility, transparency, and a commitment to evidence.
Where I Hope This Journey Leads
While I continue leading sound baths, teaching Yoga Nidra, and coaching clients, I also hope to contribute to a broader conversation about the relationship between sound, the nervous system, and human well-being.
My long-term goal is to continue learning, collaborating, and contributing to research at the intersection of:
Neuroscience
Nervous system regulation
Sound and vibration
Sensory processing
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Integrative and evidence-informed health
I don't see science and holistic wellness as opposing forces.
I believe they can inform one another.
The most meaningful discoveries often begin with curiosity, thoughtful collaboration, and a willingness to ask better questions.
For me, this isn't the end of a journey.
It's the beginning of one.
Interested in Following Along?
As I continue exploring the intersection of neuroscience, sound, and wellness, I'll be sharing research insights, personal reflections, and updates from this journey here on the blog.
Whether you're a healthcare professional, researcher, educator, fellow coach, or simply someone curious about the science of the nervous system, I'd love to have you join me.
The best questions are often the ones we explore together.
